Did you guys know that door-to-door Mormon missionaries offer to do chores for you!? Two Ben Henricksons (except way cuter and less stupid, in the face) just came to my door and were all, ‘Hi, we’re here to share the Word and help you and your family reach Jesus’ and after I said No, thanks, on account of being a Godless Heathen (I didn’t say that out loud, but I am wearing a pretty short dress today so they probably ‘got’ it), they were like, we also do service! And I thought ‘service’ meant like they were going to do a full-on Mormon service in my backyard, for me and 10 guests of my choosing, and then the blonde one started rattling off tasks they’d be delighted to take on! Yardwork! Painting! Pool cleaning!

My dad was at the sink washing dishes and I thought about inviting them in to take over, but then I remembered who they were, and that I’d have to listen to them talk about G-d and Moroni and Joseph Smith, and also that mainstream Mormons never want to talk about raids or polygamy or anything fun, and I decided I’d dry the dishes myself.

This entry is cross-posted! I'm entertaining the idea of mostly moving this operation over to my Tumblr. Probably not anytime soon, because I'm me. Also, open to yes/no votes on this Important Issue.

A friend of mine in DC worked for a Democratic Congressman from Washington state, and last spring she invited me to be her guest at the annual ‘thanks for giving us money/being proud residents and supporters of Washington state and me, the Congressman! Come drink wine and eat sumptuous meats!’ event. There was prime rib, and there were oysters, and there was apple pie (Washington apples, duh) with cheddar cheese, but mostly I remember the two staggeringly tall towers of King crab legs. 80 percent of me was all, ‘KING CRAB LEGS OMG HOW MANY OF THESE CAN I EAT/FIT IN MY PURSE’, but the other, more nagging 20 percent was offended that in these Troubled Times the budget of an elected official from a relatively poor part of the country was going towards shellfish towers for rich people, special interest groups, and me. I mentioned this to my friend and she looked at me like I was an idiot (which is not a thing I’m denying I sometimes am) and told me that every member of Congress held events like this.

I took a cab home and was lying on my bed, half out of my party dress, giving an over-the-phone recap to the New York-dwelling guy I was dating at the time. It was a quiet spring night, which was why I jumped halfway to the ceiling when I heard gunshots outside my window. Telling my paramour I was sure it had been a car backfiring, I hung up and called my neighborfriends, who confirmed that there had been a shooting on the half a block in between our two homes. I laid in bed listening to the sirens until I fell asleep, and in the morning pulled up DCist, which offered helpful links to a MySpace memo from the drug crew responsible for the shooting, warning more was to come if rival crews didn’t back off their turf.

That was the night it started to become increasingly clear to me that I didn’t have much of a future in DC.

Ira inspired me to work on my Storytelling (duh, upper-case S) in 2k10, so there you go. If this gets super boring super fast, you know who to blame.

This is information that makes me feel :-(, but is also supremely satisfying because when I was little and wanted to be a Journalist Reporter Woman, I really thought that meant I was going to write impossibly long magazine profiles (!) every week (!!), and that each profile was going to begin with what my subject was eating during the lunch or dinner we’d be having together. Old habits die hard and even though I know now that this information is useless and kind of (definitely) sexist, I ALWAYS scan celebrity profiles for the during-interview menu.

I'm in something called a mega-suite at a very swank LA hotel I'm not going to mention by name in case you're a murderer (see, Mom? I'm interested in Internet safety!). We're here to do work, of course, but that hasn't stopped us (ok, me) from doing things like taking a bath just so's I can watch the flat-screen TV mounted above the tub.

Turns out I had no reason to be nervous!

Well, that's not true. The stories were told in a random order determined by lottery, and wouldn't you know that mine was called second-to-last, meaning I had almost two hours in which to watch some really talented people tell some really funny/heartbreaking/moving-but-not-in-a-sappy-way stories, and convince myself that mine wouldn't be any good at all.

But you know what? It was! And even if it hadn't been, I wouldn't have known, because everyone was super supportive and safe space-y. They all laughed at the parts they were supposed to laugh at (my story was about the time Richard Simmons made me do the can-can and gave me dating advice) and didn't judge me for spilling a large portion of my drink onstage.

I'm pretty sure there's going to be audio relatively soon, so keep your eyes peeled for that, and mark your calendars (I don't actually know what date it's going to be, so it's a less-literal marking) for the next one!

My seatmate on the flight from San Francisco to LA was Laura Albert aka JT LeRoy, which, remember that? She was wearing a yellow leather Miss Sixty jacket and sunglasses she refused to take off during the flight. She spent every non-flying moment talking on the phone to an unidentified person, mostly about how being famous isn’t as glamorous as you’d think but try explaining that to your ‘toxic’ sister, who sees one picture of you in a magazine (at a party, with other celebrities) and totally assumes that she really gets what your life is like even though she has no idea.

In related news, it’s really hard to laugh out loud at another person and pass it off as a chuckle stemming from your reading material when your reading material is an academic text on sexual danger in Victorian London.

Sometimes I'm reading mainstream (read: non-academic) publications and the writer will, usually in passing, mention some historical event or person that I'm interested in and I feel oddly possessive? Like certain people and events belong to me, and I know other people are aware of them and, in many cases, are probably more familiar with them than I am, but STILL I'm annoyed because who told Larissa MacFarquhar she was allowed to mention the 1863 Draft Riots in an article about Internal Affairs cops?

Sorry, guys. Sundays are when I 'do me' and that's often pretty awful.

I'm at a Corner Bakery, which I always thought was a sub-par Panera. Not only is it WAY BETTER than Panera, but they have motherfucking FRESCA (I've said it before and I'll say it again--Fresca is God's Own nonalcoholic beverage) on TAP at the FREE REFILL SODA FOUNTAIN.

I might never leave.
